Nehalennia was more than just a woman first mentioned in 2nd century BC. She was a Goddess of safe sea travel, a Mother goddess and sometimes seen as a Goddess of death and rebirth.
Nehalennia indeed helped many sailors to travel safe but there was a deal made that every time she saves sailors from the storm, they make an altar in her honor. That's why to this day we can find around 160 altars made for her.
